With decades of experience in the manufacture and supply of portable electric fan heaters we often get asked about 110V electric heaters. Often this is from hire shops looking for something to offer their construction based clients during the colder months, but sometimes it’ll be facilities managers or others looking for something suitable for 110V supply. With that in mind we thought we’d put together a short, easy, guide to all things 110V:
What is 110V?
The standard domestic electrical supply in the UK is 240V, however with places such as building sites 110V is used for reasons of Health and Safety, as the lower voltage reduces the risk of serious electrical stock.
Can I get heaters suitable for use with a 110V supply?
Yes! Here at Broughton we manufacture a range of options for use on 110V. These include 16A electric fan heaters, 16A quartz halogen infrared heaters, 32A electric fan heaters and 32A quartz halogen infrared heaters.
What about 16A and 32A?
Standard electrical supply in the UK is 240V with a maximum current of 13A. 110V on the other hand is available in two current ratings; 16A and 32A. 16A allows you to have a maximum 1.5kW of heat, while 32A means you can use 3kW.
Why? As you reduce the voltage you need more current to run things e.g on 240V 13A you can run a 3kW heater but to do so on 110V it takes 26A. Some sites have 32A sockets and supplies so can run 3kW heaters while others will only have 16A supplies, so we make heaters suitable for both.
Can I use my 240V heater on 110V?
No! Because of the higher currents used on 110V the equipment uses higher rated components to suit. The mains cable will be thicker and so will the internal wiring, just as a couple of examples. You must never use a machine on a supply other than the one it was designed for, to do so could not only cause catastrophic failure to the unit it might also start a fire.
Is 110V used anywhere other than on building sites?
It’s not exclusively used on building sites and although it is used for a range of applications, including some factories or warehouses, these tend to be more industrial or specialist in nature. The standard here in the UK is 240V and wherever you see a normal three pin plug socket the same as the one’s you’ve got at home you’ll have a 240V supply. That means for shops, offices, hotels or similar you’ll need a 240V electric fan heater rather 110V.
We hope you find this quick guide useful but if there’s anything we’ve missed or you’d like further advice on the different types of site heater, or you’re still unsure which 110V electric heater best suits your application, then just give us a call on 01527 831610 where a member of our team will be only too happy to help.
